About Sun City
Admire the beauty of a community that’s the first of its kind in the world, a place specifically designed for active older adults that puts everything within their reach. Sun City’s crisp, clean architecture – its 70s-style homes are highly desired in real estate now – serves as a template for this successful, sunny retirement community.
“Retirement community” might actually be a misnomer for Sun City’s residents. These are people who worked hard to get where they are (more than a few famous faces have lived here over the years) and now play hard. Del Webb Development Company broke ground here in 1960, intending to shatter the image of retirees who just sit on the porch and watch the grass grow. Del Webb believed Sun City residents would want stylish homes, interesting neighbors, fun things to do, and entertainment nearby.
Webb was right. Sun City was a rousing success. Many residents eschew gas-guzzling luxury cars for environmentally friendly golf carts (or “electric cars,” as some residents prefer) that zip through the wide, tidy streets of this meticulously planned development. When residents and visitors want to venture farther, they have two stadiums with year-round events, major shopping centers, and numerous boutiques within a seven-mile radius.
