'Desert urbanism' proposed for former GM site

Desert Urbanism Framework Plan in Mesa, AZScottsdale-based developer DMB Associates' has a plan to create an urban space in the desert - 3,200 acres of property include dense, urban spaces, narrow pedestrian pathways to a nearby coffee shop or bookstore and a short drive to work. 

Grady Gammage Jr., zoning attorney for DMB's Mesa Proving Grounds said, "We're hoping to hit the sweet spot where we embrace the 21st-century dynamic nature with something significantly urban."  According to the company, the aim is to attract a young, urban, highly educated demographic and corporate executive types who seek a vibrant lifestyle.

Aquaterra part of Fiesta district revitalization

PREVIEW: The sales office for Aquaterra in Mesa is set up with samples from the units that will be built, including wood floors and stainless steel kitchen appliances. The sprawling hotel-condo project is planned to be built near the southeast corner of Southern Avenue and Alma School Road, behind the Bank of America tower.Progress has not slowed on a high-end condominium project that's expected to help transform the Fiesta Mall area into a destination for young business professionals. Aquaterra is viewed as a major catalyst to the revitalization of the Fiesta district as an urban village.

Plans for Aquaterra include a 6-story condo complex with 430 units, a plaza with shopping, dining and services, and a 132-key Starwood Hotels brand midlevel hotel, built in three phases.

Metropolitan project next to mall moves forward

A sales center has just opened for 342 condominiums to be built at the Metropolitan of Chandler. The 14-acre, $100 million, mixed-use project will include luxury retail and offices immediately west of Chandler Fashion Center.

Designed as an urban village to attract people who want to live, work and play in one spot, the Metropolitan will wrap around the existing Windmill Inn hotel across from Nordstrom on the west side of the mall.

Apache Junction to annex 32 acres of land

A.J. plans to annex 32 acres of state trust land, an article from the East Valley Tribune, reports that Apache Junction is planning to annex 32 acres of state trust land as the growing city prepares for a future influx of traffic that will come from a 7,700-acre planned development.

New businesses boost downtown Glendale

New businesses boost downtown Glendale, an article from The Arizona Republic, reports that the redevelopment of Glendale Avenue has been a top priority for Glendale leaders.

Two recent developments include a Fresh & Easy grocery store preparing to move into a vacant building at 51st and Glendale avenues, while a health-care business, Southwest Ambulance, has opened in a formerly vacant building at 62nd and Glendale Avenues.
